Skala

The municipality of Skala in Laconia includes the residential towns of Ag. Taxiarches, Vrontamas, Grammousa, Leimonas, Panigiristra, Peristeri, Souli, Stefania and Filisi.

The plain of Skala has been described as the “garden of Europe” as it constitutes a natural agrarian ‘factory’ of oranges so to speak, being the homeland of the Valencia orange variety; the area is also known for its extensive honey production. In the region of Vrontamas there have been archaeological expeditions that have unearthed many artefacts from the Classical and Hellenistic period, while in the greater area you will find heirlooms from the Byzantine era such as Paleomonastro, the churches of Metamorfoseos (meaning transformation) and St. George. Due to many local associations that are active in Skala, the municipality remains industrious all year round with many events happening such as book exhibitions, music concerts, fairs for local products as well as the reputable wine festival in Grammousa, and the grandiose orange fete in Stefania.
